  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from csrussian53 -- Love This Book - Why? : My maiden name is Slocum, and Joshua Slocum is a distant relative. My father was his great nephew which would make me his great, great niece - I think!! So, when I have a friend who is a sailor, I always buy her/him this book. It's quite technical, and it is NOT an autobiography. There are other books written by Joshua and his son that tell his life story, which is very interesting - and I would say this even if I where not a Slocum. Getting back to this book, he tells how he sailed around the world alone on a sloop called the "Spray" which was hardly even sea-worthy. I have read this book several times, and am always amazed how he lived to tell the tale. His adventures in this endeavor were truly a marvel...now that I think of it, why hasn't someone made a movie out of his adventures, not only sailing around the world alone, but his other adventures on the "high seas?" • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Tom Graham, Clarkston, MI -- Not sure what to think : This book was recommended by an idiot friend of mine who I doubt ever read it. Amazing how much English has changed in 125 years! I grew up around boats, so am familiar with basic nomenclature, and was able to follow story, but Slocum's version of late 19th century New England maritime 'English' was iritating to read. Maybe there is an easier to read 'updated' version out there, but as it was, I felt as if I were reading Capt Ahab's version of Moby Dick. So after Slocum passed the Canary Islands, I decided I'd 'pass' on the rest of his book. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gary Upshaw -- A Fantastic Read!! : Joshua Slocum (1844-1909) was the first person to sail solo around the world. He was a Nova Scotian-born, naturalised American seaman and adventurer. He rebuilt by hand and cutting his own wood, a worn out fishing boat, keeping its name the Spray. He learned all aspects of seamanship during many years as a sailor. A most fascinating read, fully appreciating his dry sense of humor. Amazingly, his only navigation instruments was a sextant and an old wind up alarm clock. He disappeared in November 1909 on a routine trip to the West Indies. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from D -- This guy was amazing! : He's sailing around the Cape and there's a mention of snow but not one sentence in the book is he ever whining or complaining about cold, hunger difficulty, loneliness or anything!!! Amazing! Did not like the part where he shoots at natives but otherwise, wow! I'm just learning to sail in warm Fla waters and everyone has to have their GPS and fish finders and Yeti coolers etc etc but this guy is baking doughnuts under sail. My man!!!!!! Really shows what humans are capable of. How lucky that he sailed thru an unspoiled Earth. (He did later disappear on his boat, but hey.) This book is inspiring. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Big D of VA -- Actually a very fun read! : Very entertaining. Thoroughly enjoyed the upbeat pace of this adventurous read. I found myself smiling and even laughing while reading it. Surprisingly well done. Interesting info about sailing, the lingo, the challenge, the adventure, and what it's like from the first person to circumnavigate the planet, by 'Sailing Around the World'! I recommend this book. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David R. Ward -- Delightful! : This is one of those books that is simply fun to read. It is an amazing story of an adventure told simply and in a matter of fact way without hyperbole or pomposity. It makes you feel that you, personally, can accomplish major undertakings by doing every day tasks methodically, well and with study and preparation. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bluesea -- Wonderful inspiring book : To say this book is very interesting is an understatement. To think that more than a hundred years ago Capt Slocum sailed without GPS and Navtex, no laptop navigational chart software, his difficulties in acquiring a chronometer, no apps to predict wind direction and strength, is just so inspirational. In addition, Capt Slocum has a flair for writing! His prose at times was amazing, in the early sections as he sets off on his voyage, he says "waves dancing joyously across the bay met her coming out of the harbour to dash them into myriads of sparkling gems..." and "the day was perfect, the sunlight clear and strong. Every particle of water thrown in the air became a gem., and the Spray bounding ahead snatched necklace after necklace from the sea and as often threw them away"...and later another "when I sang a favourite chant a porpoise jumped up from the water higher than the bowsprit!"... Also amazing was how in several places where he visited people seemed to already know he was on a world voyage, all in an age where communications were at snails pace with just postal delivery from place to pace (on horseback??). Hats off to how he managed to keep the boat on the same track without steering for extraordinary distances and time lengths, several hundred miles and weeks, he accomplished by trimming and setting the sails to do was a testament of his experience and sailing abilities. Did he have a secretly hidden away Aries wind vane (lol). After all he was not entirely new to sailing...he was already an accomplished sailor a master mariner by profession...yet admitted to the world his mistakes e.g. taking the paint off another boat while setting off in limited room. He used copper paint on the bottom hull shows his wisdom, you can learn so much from reading this book, amusing items pop up like his arrangements for washing (half a dory!), not that anyone would plan to do that! His respect that he showed to peoples he met (unlike some very famous mariners and explorers of the past who suffered the consequences) showed the strength of his character and humanity. Capt Slocum, we who have read your book, salute you. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 16, 2017 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- The text is garbled : I'm assuming that this has been scanned from the original but it hasn't worked. For example for some reason "ship" comes out as 'deliver". "I was born in a cold spot" becomes " I turned into born" etc etc, and this in just the first couple of paragraphs! At first I thought it was some strange maritime dialect, but a quick search found the original which you can view free with original drawings, much better, has none of these errors, a fascinating read by the way.. Its amazing that the seller didn't try actually reading before listing it for sale. I'm going to try and get a refund! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 22, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John Proudlove -- The greatest yachtsman of all time : Having read a dozen or so accounts of circumnavigators, including the likes of Robin Knox-Johnston, Hall Roth and Laura Dekker - all heroes of mine - I really believe Joshua Slocum was in a league of his own. With no experience of sailing a sloop before setting off on his three year voyage, he not only made the sailing itself seem effortless, but fills his pages with self-deprecating humour that made me laugh out loud again and again. From his hilarious encounters with hapless Fuegian pirates, to the goat which devoured Joshua's ropes, hat and charts, and the sea port which thought the devil himself had sailed in, every chapter of this beautifully written book is a delight to read. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Vivien Ogden -- Arm chair circumnavigator. : The importance of this early account of the first solo navigation cannot be over emphasised. The detailed accounts of balancing the Spray to sail her self, connect with a deep understanding of ocean behaviour must still be of much benefit to modern sailors. In preparation for the retro Golden Globe 2018 competitors could do well by using this book as a useful guide, where no modern equipment was available or invented, yet Joshua Slocum and the Spray got home safely. What happened to him in 1909, can only be surmised. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 6, 2016 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Derek F -- Great story but poor production : An amazing tale to hold ones interest throughout but spoilt by the lack of relevant illustrations. To call it "illustrated" stretches the trades description act. It is illustrated but the pictures bear little relevance to the story. There are picture captions but no pictures to accompany them. I had to Google a map of Slocum's route, it should have been included in the book. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 6, 2018 )
